„The goal of the Summer School is to create a space where faith, spirituality, and engagement meet in a concrete response to the social, ecological, and spiritual challenges of today.“
What does a good life look like in uncertain times? What does it mean to build on trust, hope, and peace when everything around us seems to be falling apart? The Summer School of the Economy of Francesco offers four days of inspiration and shared searching for how to transform the world around us in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.
With Franciscan friar Mike Lasky, we will dive into key themes drawn from the life of St. Francis and depicted in the frescoes of the Basilica of Assisi, which: speak goodness, listen to truth, give hope, receive love, and proclaim faith. We won’t just explore these topics theoretically. Participants will actively seek ways to apply this Franciscan inspiration to today's economic, social, and political realities. Ethics according to St. Francis is not just a spiritual ideal — it's a way of living justly, simply, and with respect for others and for nature.
The program also includes workshops on contemplative prayer and nonviolent communication, group sharing, optional Masses, and other spiritual offerings. In a small group of about 25 participants, there will be space for listening, sharing, and mutual inspiration.
Who is the Summer School for?
For young adults aged 20–35 who want to connect faith with engagement in the world. For those seeking deeper roots for their values. For those drawing inspiration from Christian spirituality in the face of today’s societal challenges.
Michael Lasky is a Conventual Franciscan friar living in Rome. As the general delegate for justice, peace, and integrity of creation, he works on social justice initiatives and offers formation programs focused on Catholic social teaching.
In 2019, he founded Little Portion Farm in Maryland, which produces 13,600 kilograms of organic food annually for the poor in Baltimore. In response to the war in Ukraine, he organizes social theatre workshops for children suffering from war trauma. Brother Michael has also taught at universities, served in parishes, and worked with the Franciscan International NGO at the United Nations.
The Porta Coeli Abbey is not only home to a community of Cistercian sisters but also a place where Tomáš Blaha is restoring a local orchard. Together with volunteers from around the world, they care for the apple orchard and produce biochar. Their volunteer base, now known as “Na nebi” ("In Heaven"), will host us at the monastery.
Price for the Summer school is 950 CZK + accomodation and meals. More information is in appliction forms.
